America 2008: Behold The Status Quo

I have watched for months now the machinations of this latest and greatest Presidential campaign with great focus and consideration. This election, in my opinion, is really about two core things - will the ruling elite accept a person of color running the nation, and can it be sold.

In response to overwhelming public sentiment both Democratic candidates have run on platforms of "change". And I must admit that even considering my years of work in marketing and advertising, I am significantly impressed with the high level of opposition to change that is being displayed by the American public.

This campaign has presented by far the most clear examples of media complicity and outright manipulation of the facts I have ever witnessed. And yet rather than shun the hype, Americans are plodding along like the good sheep they are, falling back on their familiar poisons and taking them in stride.

I had thought that after witnessing the stealing of two elections; the start and subsequent botching of the war in Iraq; the constantly shifting rationale's and positions on anything substantive including the price of gas; the high costs of health care; and the government subsidized departure of millions of American jobs via "Free Trade" agreements - the American people would lift their heads and send a message via some form of civil "action" that change was demanded.

To my surprise that did not happen. Instead Americans have signaled that they are fine wading through the same old divisive topics of race and sex, and any other issue that has no affect on their direct overall well-being. In fact they have divided along class and education lines to support a candidate who has made more shifts in positions and strategies during the primary race than the Bush Administration has in two terms. And that's a lot of shifts!
